Sample Tutoring Session Timeline

Setup / Chit Chat (~5 minutes)

📘

FIRST SESSION

If this is your first session with your student, teach them the tools of the virtual classroom. Have them use the freehand tool to write on the board and things like that.

Spend the first few checking in with your student, see how they're doing, how their day was. And be genuine. Genuinely talk to them and get to know them. This will go a long ways towards building a rapport with them.

Explaining what you'll cover (~20-25 minutes)

Emphasize the idea that once they're able to teach you something, then they'll know they've understood it. And from there, mention to them that you're going to work on .

Begin by using the whiteboard area of the virtual classroom to work some examples or to explain some things.

Then open up the Khan Exercises and find a relevant exercise and have them work on some number of exercises, typically in the 10-15 range.

If you need to close up the Khan Exercises and work on the whiteboard area, that's works well. But use this time to introduce the concept and work on some problems.

The teach back! (~20 minutes)

Assuming your student responded well to the problems you assigned, now is the time to switch the roles.

Really test your student by asking tough questions. Don't take it easy on them! Make them think!

I think this portion of the session should really highlight what the student is still struggling with.

Try and work with your student to close those remaining gaps and if you have time, have them teach you again.

TAKING BREAKS

Of course, if you notice your student getting tired or zoning out, feel free to take breaks and do some more chit chat.
